Chinese tech company BOE is making some bold claims about its just-revealed OLED display prototype. The company says that their new prototype, which was just revealed at IPC (Innovation Partner Conference) in Beijing, achieves 95% of the standard color gamut BT 2020. To compare, Samsung’s QD-OLED display comes in at 90% of BT 2020, and LG at 70%.

While BOE did not indicate that the new panel type was ready for mass production, industry sources are indicating that BOE is taking another stab at becoming a primary OLED supplier for Apple. Previous attempts at a working relationship with Apple were called off due to the Chinese company encountering a component shortage, not to mention Samsung (an Apple supplier) seeking an import ban on the company.
“In line with Apple’s widespread adoption of OLED panels, competition among Korean and Chinese panel makers is intensifying,” a display industry insider tells Business Korea. “Tensions in the Korean panel industry are rising as BOE is rapidly raising its technologies to a high level even in the OLED panel sector.”
