Century-old Paris cinema trades in projectors for LED displays

The historic Pathé Palace has upgraded its facilities as part of a five-year renovation

Paris’ historic Pathé Palace has been a place for masses to gather to enjoy films since 1927. The cinema recently completed a five-year renovation that saw its projectors replaced with LED displays for the first time ever. While one theater still contains a projection system, the other theaters have been fitted with Samsung Onyx cinema LED displays.

“These six cutting-edge Samsung Onyx LED screens juxtapose brilliantly against the historic cinema, blending the classic with the modern to give moviegoers a truly unique experience,” said Menno van den Berg, President, Samsung Electronics France. “The stunning visual quality that these displays provide will engage the audience on another level and do full justice to each filmmakers’ vision.”

Samsung to cease LED production

The cinema is now equipped with four 4K Onyx screens measuring over 10m (nearly 34 ft.) wide and two 2K Onyx screens measuring 5m (16 ft.) wide. Samsung says that the Pathé Palace can also deliver screenings in 3D, and can deliver Dolby Atmos sound. Samsung says that its Onyx series is the world’s first Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI)-certified cinema LED display for theatrical exhibition, and provides HDR images with clear blacks and a luminance up to 300 nits.
