In a recent op-ed for Sixteen:Nine, Screenly Co-Founder Viktor Petersson warns that there is an overlooked blind spot in today’s digital signage security: vulnerabilities in outdated hardware that runs digital signage networks can often undermine the modern security features in said networks. Compliance badges like SOC 2 and ISO 27001 create a false sense of security for buyers, he explains.
“To be fair, SOC 2 and ISO 27001 do improve security posture,” says Petersson. “They force companies to formalize disaster recovery plans, prove they can restore backups, enable MFA across systems, and deploy device management for laptops and phones. This is all valuable hygiene, though much of it is a documentation exercise.”
These certifications, however, don’t mention signage players, a detail that often goes overlooked by buyers, says Peterson.
“I’ve seen it firsthand. Running basic security audits on signage players from well-known vendors revealed results that would horrify any CTO or CISO. And yet those vendors point to compliance badges as proof of security.”
