First-gen Chromecasts around the globe begin failing

After 13 years, the original Chromecast may be at its end of life

Google ended support for the original Chromecast in late 2022, and now users around the globe are reporting that their devices have begun to stop working.

These first-gen models continued to function after Google provided their final software update, but degradation over the last four years have taken their toll. Users have begun reporting the inability to use major streaming apps, including the Google-owned YouTube, on their devices. Streaming services have responded by stating they cannot guarantee compatibility with the original Chromecast.

While it’s unclear whether or not this issue will be addressed, Google has released a statement confirming that they are aware of the issue, and are looking into it:

“We are investigating an issue impacting the ability to cast some services on Chromecast devices,” writes a Google spokesperson “We’ll circle back with an update as soon as we can. Thank you for your patience.”
