On the heels of announcing an all-new OLED production method, LG Display is reportedly working on next-gen OLED technology that would result in tandem panels with five layers, up from four.
Korean publication The Elec reports that such a five-layer tandem panel is currently in the works, to be used in a next-generation iMac from Apple, with the potential to be implemented in TVs and monitors. The Elec says that a five-layer tandem design would result in longer lasting panels with higher brightness, but would come at a higher production cost.
Earlier this year, LG Display unveiled its newest tandem panels after splitting its OLED lines into two categories: Tandem WOLED and Tandem OLED. While LG has thus far only produced four-layer tandem panels, Samsung unveiled its first five-layer panel in February.
