Google has announced it is adding a helpful feature for those who store videos on their Google Drive. In a post titled “Enhancing video navigation and accessibility with Google Drive video transcripts,” the company revealed that Drive users will have access to searchable video transcripts. The new feature will see timestamped captions of spoken words appear in a sidebar next to the video, with each piece of text highlighted as it is spoken. This will also allow users to jump directly to the part of the video they are looking for via a search function.

Notably, this feature only works with videos that already have captions (indicated by a CC button on the bottom right of the video player). If the video does not have captions, Google says you can add them automatically by “right-clicking the video in Drive > selecting Manage caption tracks > generate automatic captions. You can also generate captions when the video is playing by going to the three dot menu on top right > manage captions tracks > generate automatic captions.”
The searchable video transcript feature has already begun rolling out, and will continue through March 26.
