Google Meet to receive several updates over the next few months

Upgrades to the UI and several new features for video calls coming soon

Google has announced that it will be rolling out a series of updates to its Meet videoconferencing app. In addition to upgrades to the user interface, Google is looking to make advanced features easier and quicker to access, as well as standardizing the in-app experience between scheduled meetings and video calls.

“Today we’re starting to roll out an updated video calling experience in Google Meet that includes a new look and features to help you stay even more connected with anyone you’re chatting with — from friends and family to classmates and co-workers,” said Product Manager for Google Meet, Jennifer Shen.

The UI for video calls in Meet is getting refreshed to be more in-line with the scheduled meeting UI. Additionally, in-call messaging will now be available, making it easier to do things like share links with friends or co-workers. Background effects, filters, and accessories will now all be stackable–meaning you can freshen up your appearance as much as you’d like. Screen sharing is also coming to the Google Meet mobile app, making it easy to share presentations or videos via your phone.

Google is also introducing an “on-the-go” mode for the Meet app for Android and iOS, which the company describes as “an audio-only experience with larger, easier-to-press call control buttons. So you can take calls on your walk, in a car or on public transportation with fewer distractions.” Lastly, a new call transfer feature allows users to switch over to their phone or tablet at the press of a button, without needing to leave and re-join a call.

Google says these new features with “gradually roll out” over the next few months.
