A new nightly presence has made its home in Seoul to deter would-be criminals. Every two minutes between 7 and 10 pm, a hologram police officer alerts pedestrians that Jeodong Park is being monitored via CCTV, and that police are nearby to respond to any incidents. Modeled after a real person, the hologram stands about five and a half feet tall, and illuminates the park each night to make sure the area’s many bar patrons know police aren’t far.

The hologram officer was created by South Korean tech company Hologrammica, and police say that the technology has been an effective deterrent, telling Korean publication E-Daily that crime in the area is down 22% since the hologram’s installation.
“Although it was clear upon closer inspection that the person wasn’t a real person, the mere perception of police presence had a significant deterrent effect,” Seoul police said in a statement.
