LG revealed a number of projects it has been working on at its CES keynote this week, but most interesting among them may be the CLOiD home assistant robot. Part of the company’s broader effort to integrate AI into the home, LG says the robot has been created specifically to help complete household chores such as laundry and cooking. Unlike the several bipedal humanoid robots hitting the market recently, CLOiD gets around on a wheeled base, with a tilting torso that allows the robot to bend to pick up objects.
Each arm features seven degrees of freedom, which LG says matches the mobility of a human arm.
“The shoulder, elbow and wrist allow forward, backward, rotational and lateral motion, while each hand includes five independently actuated fingers for fine manipulation,” says LG. “This configuration allows LG CLOiD to handle a wide range of household objects and operate in kitchens, laundry rooms and living areas.”
At the keynote, a short video of the home assistant robot was shown before one appeared on stage, going through preplanned tasks in a brief technical demo. CLOiD’s ability to sync with a smart home ecosystem was shown off, allowing users to effectively communicate with the robot. Be sure to check out the complete demo, timestamped above.
