Meta announces its first VR glasses

Featuring a micro-OLED display and hologram videocalls

For its next VR device, Meta is taking a whole new approach. Upgrading to micro-OLED instead of LCD, the upcoming Meta VR Glasses take the form of a more traditional pair of glasses instead of the headset design the Meta Quest line is known for.

“Meta VR Glasses feature a 5K Infinite Display built on micro-OLED panels, with 37 pixels per degree, delivering stunning clarity and detail — great for text legibility,” Meta said in its announcement. “The ultra-compact pancake lenses built specifically for this device are the reason cinema-grade clarity can live in something that looks like glasses.”

The Meta VR Glasses will feature support for Dolby Vision and Dolby Audio, with the spatial audio technology integrated directly into the glasses. An updated hologram calling feature will be available with the glasses for direct video calls.

“We’re introducing hologram technology to provide a photorealistic digital version of you, including your real-time expressions and reactions, for hands-free video calling on Meta VR Glasses,” explains Meta.

The glasses are cabled to an external puck, without any straps or heavy hardware attached to the wearer’s head. The glasses feature a passthrough camera in order to keep the wearer aware of their surroundings if desired. In addition to the video calling feature, Meta says it will be updating the glasses’ platform with new 3D movies each month, as well as immersive live-streaming of sporting events throughout the year, with partnerships with MLB, NBC Sports, TNT Sports, and UFC.

The Meta VR Glasses are slated to launch in Spring of 2027.
