Microsoft sunsets Teams’ Together Mode

Removing the feature will make room for further platform improvements, says Microsoft

Together Mode, Microsoft Teams’ ‘immersive’ video conferencing feature borne out of the pandemic, will soon be no more. With Together Mode, users were able to create a virtual lecture theater or meeting room in an effort to make participants more connected.

Launched in 2020, the feature was one of many meant to help combat user isolation during the pandemic. Now, though, Microsoft says it is taking things in a new direction. The company says it will use the freed up resources to work on other improvements, while many of the use cases for Together Mode are addressed in other areas of Microsoft Teams.

“Today, the core need Together mode was designed to support, namely seeing the people who matter in a meeting, can now be fully met by the modern Gallery view, which can display up to 49 participants at once,” says Katarina Tranker, a Product Manager for Microsoft Teams.

Tranker says that an update to Teams is currently rolling out that removes the Together Mode toggle, and that users will see a more streamlined UI as a result.
