Camp Snap has announced its first video camera, the retro-inspired CS-8 that takes its design cues from the Super 8 cameras of yesteryear. Unlike the rest of the company’s line, the CS-8 stays true to the handhelds of decades past with the absence of a display to review footage.
While the camera is fully digital, controls look pleasantly analog, such as a dial that selects the desired aspect ratio, from 16:9 widescreen to a vintage-looking 4:3 option. Additional aspect ratios include ones tailored for the social media age, like 1:1 and 9:16. Another dial next to the aspect ratio selector toggles on digital filters that up the retro aesthetic, including sepia tone and a film grain effect. A trigger by the handle toggles recording, and the camera can zoom up to 10x, controlled with a pair of buttons next to the viewfinder.
The CS-8 can shoot video up to 4K resolution in H.264 (MP4), though 4K is limited to certain aspect ratios, and records mono audio. Storage is handled via an SD-card slot, and included 4GB card can be upgraded to 128Gb. According to a review by The Hollywood Reporter, the included 4GB card holds roughly 4 hours of footage. Charging and connectivity is done via USB-C.
The Camp Snap CS-8 is currently available for preorder at a special price of $149 (MSRP $199) at the company’s website. Shipping is expected to begin mid-September.
