Nikon has officially entered the filmmaking space with the Nikon ZR cinema camera. Leveraging the technology gained with the company’s acquisition of RED, the ZR is an ultra-lightweight, full-frame camera that marks the debut of Nikon’s new Z Series. Weighing just over 1 lb, Nikon says it will be the lightest entry in the new series.
The ZR features R3D NE, a new video recording file format based on RED’s R3D RAW video recording codec and developed for Nikon cameras. The company says that this format uses RED’s technology to ensure accurate color mapping. Two base ISO sensitivities are supported (ISO 800 and ISO6400), as is a broad dynamic range of 15+ stops. Internal recording of up to 6K/59.94p is available.
New budget video camera is inspired by classic Super 8 handhelds
Nikon claims the ZR is the world’s first camera to support 32-bit float audio recording with both built-in and external microphones. The built-in microphone is powered by Nokia’s OZO Audio, and offers five pickup patterns for audio recording. The camera’s interface is displayed on a 4-inch monitor, and the company says its flange focal distance of 16mm is the shortest among full-frame cameras. The ZR utilize’s the Nikon Z mount to support a variety of lenses.
The Nikon ZR 6K cinema camera is currently available for pre-order for $2,199.95.
