Google begins rollout of fix for outage of older Chromecast devices

Those who reset their devices may have to wait a little longer for a fix

UPDATE: Good news for owners of Chromecast models that have been affected by the mass outage caused by an expired security certificate. Google has begun rolling out a fix for the decade-old devices, which will take place over several days.

“We have started to roll out a fix for the problem with Chromecast (2nd gen) and Chromecast Audio devices, which will be completed over the next few days. Your device must be connected to receive the update,” Google wrote in its support update.

When reports of the issue initially began spreading, Google urged owners to not reset their devices. It seems that was for good reason, as owners who have reset their device will now need to wait a little longer, as this rollout will not be able to fix those devices.

“If you performed a factory reset during initial troubleshooting, you may still be experiencing an issue where you cannot re-setup your device,” Google wrote. “We are working to resolve this as soon as possible. Please continue to check the Community page here for updates and next steps.”

The following was originally published March 13, 2025:

Reports quickly began to pile up over last weekend of Chromecast 2nd gen and Chromecast Audio users unable to use their devices, instead being met with an error reading: “Untrusted device: couldn’t be verified. This could be caused by outdated device firmware.”

First spotted by 9to5Google, users flocked to Reddit and Google forums to investigate their error message, quickly realizing there was a widespread issue. While Google has been phasing out the Chromecast line, the company has previously stated that these affected models would continue receiving support. Owners of affected devices have reported online that they suspect that the error is caused by an expired security certificate, which would line up with the fact that the issue cropped up in mass numbers strictly on older Chromecast models.

On Monday, Google released a statement assuring users that it is aware of the issue and recommending users not reset their devices while a remedy is developed.

“We’re aware of an emerging issue impacting Chromecast 2nd gen and Chromecast Audio devices and are working on a fix,” said Google. “Do not factory reset your device – we will keep you all updated when the fix rolls out. If you have already factory reset your device, we will provide instructions to set your device back up as soon as possible. Thank you for your patience.”
