Pixar’s newest movie, Elio, hits theaters this week, and the animation studio has announced that it will be screened in true DCI HDR. True DCI HDR requires self-emissive LED displays, which is why Pixar has unveiled its commitment to the format in a joint announcement with Samsung. During Samsung’s launch of its next-gen Onyx movie screens at CineEurope in Barcelona, Pixar confirmed it would be mastering its future projects in DCI HDR for Samsung Onyx displays, going so far as to have a next-gen Onyx display installed at its Emeryville, California campus.
“Samsung’s Onyx screens allow our Pixar artists to present their stories exactly as they envisioned them — vivid, dynamic and true to life,” said Jessie Schroeder, VP Post Production, Pixar Animation Studios. “By mastering our films in HDR with Onyx, we continue to unlock a new level of visual storytelling for filmmakers and deliver the next generation of cinematic experiences for our audiences.”
Pixar had previously released 2023’s Elemental and last year’s Inside Out 2 in DCI HDR, but this mark’s the studio’s first public commitment to the format for future titles.
