$700K projection mapping show malfunctions in South Korea

The Cheomseongdae Art Media show was created to coincide with 2025 APEC

Attendees at the Cheomseongdae observatory and heritage site in South Korea didn’t get the light show they were hoping for last week, thanks to a projector malfunction. The Korea Heritage Service, alongside Gyeongju City, had spent 1 billion won (about $700,000) on a projection mapping show to coincide with the 2025 APEC forum. Instead of the the expected show, the observatory was projected with phrases including “Shutting down” and “Display mode”.

The malfunction forced attendees waiting for a fix to eventually leave, with The Chosun Daily reporting guests taking to social media with updates such as “I set aside other plans to come see the Cheomseongdae media art, but it still hasn’t been fixed,” and “Everyone should check before coming.”

The Korea Heritage Service and Gyeongju City promised to replace the faulty projector to ensure the issue would not arise during future screenings.
