Samsung is looking to up its commitment to in-car display technology. First reported by Korean publication The Elec, Samsung Display is developing plans to begin mass production of two-stack tandem OLED displays for the auto industry. Tandem OLED technology has begun to boom over the last year, showing up all over the consumer market in the form of TVs and monitors. Tandem OLEDs are said to deliver higher brightness and power efficiency than single OLED panels, with some manufacturers going all the way up to four-stack tandem displays.
The vast majority Samsung Display’s supply of auto displays thus far have been single OLED panels, but the company has previously supplied a limited quantity of two-stack tandem OLED displays to Audi. Going forward, The Elec reports that in response to growing industry demand, Samsung Display is looking to pivot its production priorities to tandem displays. Additionally, the company is said to be developing both flexible OLED panels for auto applications as well as hybrid OLED displays that have been coated with thin-film-encapsulation. These hybrid displays are a more cost-effective alternative to fully flexible OLED, whose properties lend themselves to curved or nontraditional display shapes.
