Samsung Display made a bold statement at this year’s IMID 2024 conference in South Korea by announcing its intent to cut the power consumption of its OLED panels in half. As reported by Korean newspaper The Elec, the company is aiming to reduce the power needed to run its displace in order to meet the needs of the “AI era.”
“Samsung Display is aiming to reduce the power consumption of its display panels by over 50%,” reports The Elec, citing a senior executive from the company. “The display panel maker was developing technologies that remove all factors that influence power consumption in its display, Samsung Display executive vice president Yi Chung said during an industry conference in Jeju, South Korea.”

Chung referenced Samsung Display’s current progress in reducing power consumption, including its 2021 introduction of ECO-OLED, which eliminates the need of a polarizer film layer within the panel. The Korean tech giant claims that the elimination layer reduces the power needed to run ECO-OLED by 25%.
While no time frame for the 50% reduction target was revealed, Samsung Display was transparent about what other technologies it intends to combine with ECO-OLED to reach its goal. Chung commented that the company is working on “multi frequency driving,” which involves controlling power consumption by applying different refresh rates to different parts of the display as needed. The growing trend of tandem-panels was also mentioned, which has already had a proven effect on brightness and power efficiency in OLED panels.
