Samsung showcases EL-QD/NanoLED prototypes

New panels offer increased brightness at a greater power efficiency

SID Display Week 2026 saw Samsung showcase new prototypes for EL-QD displays. The next-gen technology is confusingly also referred to as  NanoLED or QDEL, and offers benefits including improved image quality and color accuracy.

The panels on display included a 6.5-inch panel with a brightness of up to 400 nits, as well as an 18-inch panel with a brightness of up to 500 nits. Samsung says that these new panels represent increases in brightness of 25% and 33%, respectively, over last year’s prototypes.

EL-QD panels forgo light-emitting diodes, OLED or otherwise, entirely. Instead, the quantum dots in these panels emit light directly through electrical signals, resulting in greater power efficiency and color accuracy.

“Improving emission efficiency not only enhances brightness but also reduces power consumption,” said a Samsung spokesperson, regarding the prototypes. “EL-QD is expected to contribute to lowering display power usage and improving battery efficiency in future AI-based high-computing environments.”
