Samsung TVs experience global service outage

The issue has resolved itself, and the root cause remains a mystery

Users around the world began to report issues with their Samsung smart TVs last Thursday at 5 pm ET, all seemingly experiencing the same issue: the home page of each TV would function normally, but when attempting to open any app, each user was met with one of several error messages. The messages ran the gamut of maintenance alerts, “no connection” notifications, and certification errors, with users taking to Reddit and the official Samsung forums to find the cause.

The issue had largely appeared to resolve itself the following day, and as of press time, Samsung has yet to acknowledge the outage and the root cause remains a mystery. The fact that the issue had a global, simultaneous fix has online speculation pointing to a server outage or issues with Samsung’s cloud, raising questions about today’s seemingly omnipresent reliance on cloud-based services.
