This year’s CinemaCon saw Samsung introduce the next generation of its Onyx cinema LED screens. Each next-gen Onyx screen is capable of displaying true black, and supports framerates of up to 120Hz at 4K (assuming the connected IMB can run at that rate). Samsung says that this new generation of screens bump up the brightness to a peak of 300 nits.
In addition to supporting both scope (2.39:1) and flat (1.85:1) aspect ratios, the new Onyx LED screens are available in the following standard sizes:
- 5 meters (16ft) — Ideal for boutique and smaller-format theaters (Pixel pitch: 1.25mm)
- 10 meters (33ft) — The industry standard for premium cinemas (Pixel pitch: 2.5mm)
- 14 meters (46ft) — A versatile format that delivers an impressive, large-scale cinematic experience (Pixel pitch: 3.3mm)
- 20 meters (66ft) — A large-format solution for premium auditoriums (Pixel pitch: 5.0mm)
Samsung notes that flexible scaling options are also available for applications where something other than a standard size is needed. Installation of this new generation of Onyx screens is slated to begin in Fall of this year.
