Sony trademarks ‘True RGB’

New panel type expected to appear in Sony's 2026 releases

Sony has revealed its plans to compete with the next-gen panel types employed by its competitors. While it’s been known that Sony has been working on a new advanced Mini-LED display type, The Walkman Blog has spotted that the company has just trademarked the phrase ‘True RGB.’

The panel type is expected to compete directly with the recent RGB advancements made by companies such as Samsung’s Micro-RGB. This new generation of panels typically involve individually controlled red, green, and blue micro RGB LEDs laid out in an ultra-fine pattern, allowing for higher brightness and color accuracy. In Sony’s case, these different colored LEDs can be controlled separately across all dimming zones, further increasing contrast and a allowing for a more lifelike picture.

FlatpanelsHD extensively covered the new technology when it was revealed last March, before it had an official name. Sony is expected to employ the new True RGB panel type in its 2026 releases.
