TCL reveals ‘retina-grade’ micro-LED

TCL's .28-inch panel is positioned for future AR-enabled devices

TCL CSOT is expanding its AR headset display offerings with the introduction of a tiny micro-LED panel that the company claims delivers “retina-grade” picture quality. Unveiled at the company’s annual DTC conference, the panel measures barely over a quarter of an inch, and is intended to sit much closer to the eye than those found in devices like the Apple Vision Pro.

Ming-Jong Jou, Chief of the Technology Planning Center, TCL CSOT, commented on the new panel to FlatPanelsHD, stating that it features a 280×720 resolution pixel density of 5131 pixels-per-inch.

“This display’s self-emissive nature delivers high brightness, high contrast, and a wide color gamut, enabling a “retina-grade” viewing experience for near-eye applications such as AR glasses and ultra-slim VR devices,” said Jou. “With its advantages in miniaturization, ultra-high resolution, and low power consumption, this product sets a new benchmark for next-generation lightweight, high-performance displays.”

While Jou was unable to comment on the new panel’s availability, TCL CSOT supplies panels for companies including Samsung and Sony, so it is possible we will see it integrated in an AR device in the near future.
