The Wizard of Oz at Sphere tops $65M in ticket sales

The new immersive showing of the 1939 film sold 280,000 tickets in the 15 days following the show's premiere

Just weeks after opening, Sphere Entertainment has announced that The Wizard of Oz at Sphere has been a resounding success. According to the company, the new Sphere experience has sold over 500,000 tickets as of September 12, with 280,000 tickets sold in the 15 days following the show’s premiere.

Since going on sale to the public on June 10th, the immersive experience has generated over $65 million in ticket sales, says Sphere Entertainment. The show, which premiered on August 28, begins with a transformed Atrium designed to take guests into a sepia-toned version of Dorothy’s home in Kansas. When exiting the bowl following the film, guests will see that the Atrium has transformed into the Emerald City, complete with vibrant colors.

To take advantage of the venue’s unique directional sound capabilities, the score for the film was re-recorded, while the cast’s original vocal performances were preserved. This results in a fully immersive audio experience, which is then combined with the Sphere’s multi-sensory 4D elements to make guests feel like they are part of the film.
