Warner Bros. is scanning its films in 8K

Around 20 titles have been scanned from film to 8K

8K has long seemed like a far-off dream rather than an inevitability. While technical limitations of displays are no longer the issue, there has simply been a lack of content being made available at 8K resolution, though it seems that the tide is slowly beginning to turn. At the 8K Association’s panel at this year’s NAB, it was revealed that Warner Bros. has been scanning films in 8K.

“Warner Bros said that it has scanned around 20 films in 8K in recent years. Each film is scanned at 4K or 8K depending on the visible difference,” wrote the 8K Association. “The scanner uses a static film + RGB flash illumination to capture each frame.”

Samsung’s upcoming projector the first to receive 8K certification

This continues the studio’s foray into 8K, as Warner Bros. recently partnered with Samsung to showcase film trailers in 8K just over a year ago to get more eyes on the ultra-high-def resolution. The movies scanned to 8K were shot on film, including some on 70mm, though no specific titles were confirmed.
