The Chinese city of Hangzhou is putting the latest in AI-powered robotics to use in the form of the Hangxing No. 1– a nearly six-foot-tall humanoid robot meant to direct pedestrian traffic at a major intersection. Equipped with a badge and whistle, the robot is synced with the traffic signal system to assist human offers with traffic guidance. Hangxing No. 1 even gives verbal warnings to pedestrians that break traffic law, and can use its sensors to detect non-motorized vehicles. While currently a supplemental tool, city police say that they plan to continually upgrade Hangxing No. 1 with large language models to enable it to operate independently and offer directions to inquiring pedestrians.
