WATCH: Holiday drone shows cancelled after malfunction in Orlando leads to injury

7 year old boy transported to hospital after struck by falling drone

A scary scene unfolded on December 21st in Florida, as a holiday drone show at Orlando’s Lake Eola Park experienced malfunctions. Several minutes into the show, multiple units began falling from the sky, while others began colliding with one another. Some drones that fell from their intended flight path fell harmlessly into the lake, while others hit land near bystanders. One 7 year old boy was struck, and was rushed to the hospital with injuries.

According to CNN, the show was run by Sky Elements Drones, a drone show production company based out of Texas. As a result of the incident, the company’s permission to fly multiple drones has been suspended by the FAA pending an investigation.

“[Sky Elements] wants to extend our sincere hope for a full and speedy recovery to those impacted at our Lake Eola show in Orlando on Saturday, Dec. 21,” the company said in a statement. We are diligently working with the FAA and City of Orlando officials to determine the cause and are committed to establishing a clear picture of what transpired.”

Following the malfunction in Orlando, multiple planned holiday drone shows across the country were cancelled, including shows planned by the cities of Dallas and Austin, Texas, a New Year’s Eve event in New York City, and a show that was to take place at Universal Orlando.
