According to the repair specialist at iFixit, Apple has been on an uncharacteristic roll this year when it comes to pleasing the self-repair community. Between making the battery in this year’s iPhone models much easier to remove and replace and giving the new Mac Mini expandable storage, the tech giant has scored some big wins this year for repair enthusiasts. Unfortunately, it looks like that trend largely ends with the new MacBook Pro M4. iFixit’s teardown of this year’s MacBook Pro (featuring Apple’s M4 chip) reveals that structurally, not much has changed. Moreover, Apple’s maligned parts-matching software and calibration issues remain, serving as major roadblocks for those wishing to repair their devices with third-party parts. A small win can be found in the device’s battery, which is now secured using stretch-release adhesive strips instead of being completely glued down. This upgrade isn’t enough to totally boost the MacBook Pro M4’s repairability score in the eyes of iFixit, however.
