Meta’s newest addition to the Quest line has made it into the hands of the public, which means repair specialists iFixit has broken the device down into its components to grade its ease of repair. Meta announced the Quest 3S last month, revealing its strategy of moving away from more expensive micro-OLED displays in order to provide an AR experience for the masses at a much more affordable price point.

Interestingly, iFixit’s teardown reveals that in many way, the Quest 3S is less of a scaled-down Quest 3 and more of an upgraded Quest 2. Many of the device’s components are legacy parts from the Quest 2, while meaningful improvements have been made in areas like its dual IR sensors, as opposed to the Quest 2’s single depth sensor. iFixit applauds Meta for some of the design choices made in the new Quest 3S, including its use of legacy components in what ends up being a real upgrade for affordable AR.
