WATCH: Meta Ray-Ban Display teardown

Meta's latest microdisplay-integrated smart glasses pack in more than meets the eye, but repair enthusiasts won't be impressed

Meta’s latest generation of its Ray-Ban smart glasses, dubbed the Meta Ray-Ban Display, feature a miniature LCD screen integrated into the lens to give wearers the complete everyday-wear AR experience. While the features of these new glasses have been the subject of much press, not much has been said about the glasses’ build quality or repairability. Enter the repair gurus at iFixit, who have published a complete teardown video of the Meta Ray-Ban Display. The good news? There is some truly advanced tech crammed into these wearables, including a micro-projector that beams images in full-color to the lenses, as well as the 600 x 600 micro-display. The bad news? The glasses fail the self-repair test abysmally.

While the battery is difficult, not impossible, to repair, the rest of the build is entirely unapproachable, involving specialty glasses and plenty of glue. This could be a major drawback for self-repair advocates who don’t want to find themselves in a difficult position if something goes slightly awry with their $800 pair of specialty glasses. Be sure to view iFixit’s entire teardown and review above.
