Several years ago, LG showcased a concept rollable phone with an OLED display that could expand at the push of a button. The phone made waves when displayed at CES, but never released to consumers. The inner workings of the phone, which could grow its screen real estate up to 40%, remained a mystery. Until now, that is, as tech YouTuber JerryRigEverything has gotten his hands on the prototype.
In a recent video, the YouTuber breaks down the phone to see how the rollable OLED panel was constructed. Spring-loaded arms hold the panel in place as the frame slides around it, while two small motors do the heavy lifting. The concept may be shelved for now, but perhaps advances to the mechanism will see a similar phone released in the future.
