2009 Judges’ Award: College Basketball Experience
The College Basketball Experience in Kansas City, Mo., is certainly immersive. As you enter, you hear a pre-game pep talk. Full-motion video and fan noise swirl when you walk through the tunnel. Then suddenly you’re in the middle of it all, shooting free throws against the backdrop of a hostile crowd or handling play-by-play in a TV studio.

Design and Production had its work cut out to keep the show going, particularly when it came to integrating sensor technology into its AMX show control system. For example, when shooting free throws, the system needs to know not only when players make a basket, but also when they miss. A light curtain array senses if a shot was taken; a motion detector captures the ball in flight; and a sensor inside the net detects if a shot went through. Taken altogether, the show system, which controls lights, AV, and more, knows how to react to a swish or a miss.
