WOODBURY, MN, May 19, 2009 — Recognizing that children and families in war-torn areas of the world have essential needs different from those in the United States, employees at
recently collected and sent consumable and nonperishable items to the children’s hospital on Bagram Air Base in Bagram, Afghanistan.
Inspired by the stories shared by a Calypso Systems employee’s son stationed in Afghanistan, the 25 employees of the small technology company realized that they could impact the lives of families that were suffering halfway around the world.
“We spend every day improving young people’s lives through high-tech education tools, so there was no question that we would help underprivileged children obtain the most basic necessities,”? said Rick Mathewson, vice president of product development and partner of Calypso Systems, and father of the soldier stationed in Afghanistan. “This was a great opportunity for Calypso Systems and our employees, on an individual level, to make a big impact in the lives of these children by meeting a different kind of need.”?
The donation package consisted of four boxes filled with baby formula, clothing and shoes as well as toys, stuffed animals and sports equipment such as Frisbees, baseball bats and soccer balls for the children.
“Through my son, we heard that the hospital employees were overjoyed with the shipment and repeatedly said it was by far the best delivery of items they had ever received,”? said Mathewson. “It was truly touching to hear that such a small gesture made such an impression on the children and their families. It is a great reminder that each of us can help improve the world we live in – even if it is in small ways.”?
Recognizing that children and families in war-torn Afghanistan continue to be in need of supplies and donations, Calypso Systems plans to send another shipment in June.
