The Innovator Award, organized by the

Defence Teaming Centre

(DTC) – a branch of the Australian Industry & Defence Network – recognizes a company that has invested in research and development to produce innovative products and/or services that have contributed to building the capability of the defence industry in South Australia. The Christie Matrix StIM WQ, which is the world’s brightest, solid state WQXGA simulation projection system, fended off stiff competition from BAE Systems and NewSat to clinch the coveted award.

The award-winning Christie Matrix StIM WQ is a fully integrated projection system designed to address the requirements of today’s most demanding simulation and training applications. Its unique, dual input architecture makes it the only WQXGA simulation projection system available today that displays separate channels for visible light and Infra-Red (IR) spectrum for simulated Night Vision Goggles training. With the ability to separate RGB and IR channel management, the Matrix StIM WQ offers greater system design flexibility, enabling the user to tailor and optimize the system to meet the specific night training requirement.

Another advantage is its ability to composite the two 60Hz RGB inputs to deliver true 120Hz RGB operation. The result is dramatically improved image quality without image artifacts or perceived loss of brightness while maintaining compatibility with current Image Generator technology, and without the need to make changes to the visual database. Designed for 24/7 operation and with a platform rated at 50,000 hours Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF), the Christie Matrix StIM WQ’s rugged design for motion platform use is a durable projection system with no consumables and virtually maintenance-free. This helps to offer a cost-effective solution to lower the cost of ownership in the long run.

Michael Bosworth, general manager, Christie Australia, and Jim Gray, business development manager, Christie Australia, were presented with the Innovator Award during the awards presentation ceremony at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre on May 30. The event was attended by over 400 representatives from Australia’s defence industry, and graced by the Honorable Jay Weatherill, Premier of South Australia.

“This award would not have been possible without the inspiration and hard work from our partners, management and fellow colleagues, for whom I have deep respect, and have worked tirelessly with to ensure that our visual solutions, such as the Christie Matrix StIM WQ, delivers the best visual experience for everyone who uses it,” Bosworth said in his acceptance speech.

Commenting on the win, Lin Yu, vice president, Christie Asia Pacific, said, “We’re very proud and honored to receive the Innovator award, and I would like to thank DTC and the judging panel for their recognition of the capabilities of our Christie Matrix StIM WQ projector. This is a clear testimony of the high quality and performance of Christie’s advanced visual technologies in meeting the needs of the most demanding users and applications.”
