Dirac Research Announces Smartphone Debut of its ‘Dirac Panorama Sound’ Audio Solution

Dirac Research, the global leader in digital sound optimization technology, today announced that its Dirac Panorama Sound solution will make its smartphone debut in the just-launched Smartisan Nut R1 smartphone. Dirac Panorama Sound is a pioneering speaker-optimization solution that produces immersive surround sound audio from embedded speakers positioned only a few inches apart from one another in products such as smartphones and portable speakers.

Like most smartphones, the Smartisan Nut R1 is equipped with one primary speaker – positioned at the phone’s bottom and responsible for music playback, ringtones, speakerphone amplification, and more – and one receiver speaker, positioned at the phone’s top and responsible for audio produced during standard phone calls.

Using advanced MIMO (multiple-input and multiple-output) technology, Dirac Panorama Sound enables the primary speaker and receiver speaker to coordinate with each other like a finely-tuned orchestra, rather than interfere with each other. The result is that both speakers’ audio performance is enhanced for better sound quality thanks to the co-optimization of impulse and frequency response. An extra-wide sound field is created so that users can enjoy immersive surround sound experiences from small devices.

“The advent of mobile devices and content streaming services have dissolved the walls of the traditional home theater – making its location more mobile and portable than ever before,” stated Erik Rudolphi, Dirac’s General Manager of Mobile. “Today’s most innovative and forward-thinking manufacturers, like Smartisan, understand the changing nature of the industry and are prioritizing the mobile device listening experience in order to continuously remain ahead of their customers’ expectations.”

Dirac Panorama Sound is fundamentally different than other mobile audio solutions. Unlike traditional technologies that rely on phase shift to create an impression of spaciousness, Dirac leveraged its years of experience in the HiFi and automotive audio space to develop a patented sound field control/ synthesis technology that isolates the left and right stereo channels – as they exist in a surround sound set-up – and delivers each directly into the listener’s corresponding ears.

By doing so, the listener hears in each ear sound that is isolated, separated, and uncompromised by the other channel, even though both audio channels emit from a source where the individual speakers are within three inches of each other. The net result of this audio breakthrough is an immersive surround sound home theater-like listening experience generated through a smartphone.

“Smartisan consistently develops best-in-class smartphones because we pay such keen attention to our customers’ wants and needs, and general market trends, and respond accordingly,” stated a Smartisan company representative. “As the smartphone becomes the primary device for entertainment consumption, audio quality can no longer be viewed as an afterthought or secondary feature but rather a critical component to the device’s audiovisual experience. It’s this reality that drove us to collaboration with Dirac, and we’re proud to be the first company to leverage the immersive power of Dirac Panorama Sound in a smartphone.”

Founded in May 2012, Smartisan is a Chinese multinational technology company headquartered in Beijing. It designs and markets consumer electronic devices and online services. Its hardware product line includes the Smartisan smartphone and the Smartisan earphone. Its consumer software includes the Smartisan OS operating system. The company is known for its beautiful designs and unique approach to smartphones, and therefore have a loyal set of fan following in China.

As Smartisan’s flagship of this year, the Nut R1 comes with a 6.17-inch display of an 18.7:9 aspect ratio, 12MP + 20MP dual rear cameras, 24MP front camera, a Snapdragon 845 processor and a 3600mAh battery. The price of the R1 falls between $549 and $1388 for different variants. The Smartisan R1 is available for purchase on the official site and also on JD.com.
