Rockers Queens of the Stone Age have announced an extensive world tour, and Chromlech Elidy-Big LEDs will be hitting the road with the band. The tour kicks off in Europe in June. A.C.T Lighting is the exclusive distributor of Chromlech Elidy fixtures in North America.
Queens of the Stone Age just released a new album of original songs, “…Like Clockwork,” their first in six years. They made a live comeback in March at Lollapalooza Brazil and have summer tour festival dates set for the UK, Germany, Sweden, Finland, Luxembourg, Denmark, Poland, Hungary and Spain.
Lighting designer Paul Normandale is using 15 Elidy-Bigs on the tour hanging five in the air and placing five each on either side of the big screen behind the band. The fixtures, supplied by Upstaging, are deployed to display bitmapped content.
“I first saw Elidy-Bigs demo-ed in the UK,” says Normandale. “I thought they would work well on the tour since they’re a tungsten color source. And I was impressed with the unexpected nature of the effects you can create with them.”
French-made Chromlech Elidy fixtures are the world’s first LED matrixes capable of projecting volumetric graphics. They combine high-output, calibrated, warm white LEDs with specific optics to generate extremely narrow beams that far exceed the intensity of LED screens. Elidy fixtures are also decorative items that can blend easily into scenery, backgrounds and décor by using a wide range of accessories, including unique new customized covers. These covers are attached either magnetically or as a snap-on and change the panels’ appearance to take on different colors and textures, including wood, metal, mirror, leather, stone and even grass.
The Elidy-Big fixtures on the Queens of the Stone Age tour are a nine-tile configuration of the company’s 5×5 high-power LED matrixes.
Normandale reveals that the Elidy-Bigs are “working just great. Every day we find a new look we can create with them.”
