Haivision Publishes SRT Open Source Specification - Protocol for Low Latency Video Streaming and File Transfer

The SRT Alliance, supporting the SRT Open Source Project, announces that Haivision has published a detailed technical overview of the protocol and technology for very low latency streaming (sub-second) over public networks.


SRT is a protocol Haivision created and implemented on their high performance Makito X encoders, decoders, and Haivision Media Gateway products before making the protocol and technology stack open source and co-founding the SRT Alliance in April 2017.

The 89 page document is titled “Secure Reliable Transport (SRT) Protocol — Technical Overview” is now available for download. It details all aspects of SRT including its origins, packet structures, the sender and receiver operations, packet loss recovery techniques, handshaking mechanisms, timing and latency, and encryption.

Haivision announced the document’s availability to SRT Alliance members on the alliance’s Slack channel in conjunction with Demuxed 2018 - The Conference for Video Engineers in San Francisco, a venue where the thought leaders in network video applications gather and share visions and ideas and discuss the latest trends in broadcast and streaming.

“Everyone has been asking for more information, and asking about SRT’s progress towards standardization,” said Mahmoud Al-Daccak, Haivision’s chief technology officer. “This effort details every aspect of SRT and will be the basis of an official RFC, Request for Comment, in the pursuit towards a standard.”

Since becoming open source 18 months ago, over 160 companies (including Microsoft, Comcast, EBU/Eurovision, Harmonic, Ateme, MediaKind, Brightcove, and Kaltura) have shown their support of the emerging standard by joining the SRT Alliance, which Haivision co-founded with Wowza to promote the SRT Open Source Project.
