MERCED, CA, SEPTEMBER 5, 2007 – Mammoth Sound & Vision, an audio purist, film and high-end music studio in Hollywood, CA, has turned to LaChapell Audio for its 992 TLS preamplifier, a dual mono, fully balanced vacuum tube preamplifier for commercial recording and broadcast. Mammoth Sound & Vision utilized LaChapell‘s 992 TLS preamp in recording the Royal Crown Revue album “El Toro,” as well as some solo work for its trumpeter, Scott Steen.
“When working with Scott, his trumpet tends to be screamer,” said George Johnsen, Director of Recording at Mammoth Sound & Vision. “The 992 went from an incredible clean preamp to a funky, sweet, overdrive sound – the range of which perfectly suited the many different colors of the tunes on the session.”
The LaChapell Audio Model 992 is a two channel fully balanced all-tube preamplifier and instrument input amplifier. Utilizing a total of eight vacuum tubes, with four tubes per channel, the 992 easily delivers performance well beyond the limits of audibility. The 992 features a transformer-less balanced differential microphone input utilizing two USA made 6072A‘s per channel. With the 992 TLS, the full burden of generating gain falls on the input tubes themselves, isolating the 6072s as the primary source of character.
“LaChapell‘s 992 TLS has become one of my favorite preamps,” adds Johnsen. “One of the most useful aspects of the 992 is its meter-off switch. It is especially handy when going for a rich overdrive sound, and burying the meter. The 992 preamp gives great sound and has a rock solid build for exceptional durability.”
LaChapell‘s 992 features an appealing visual design and has a clean, easy to understand layout that is elegant and functional, without the over-knobbed cluttered layouts that overcrowd the marketplace. Designed with reliability and “on the road” stamina, the 992 features high grade aluminum stock milled to a sturdy 1/4” front panel with a chip resistant powder coating finish. All internal components are secured using PEM-type fasteners and tie-downs.
In operation, the user has individual control over the input and output gain stages of each channel. Output signal strength is easily monitored through an isolated Sifam back-lit VU meter. There are also five illuminated toggle switches per channel for Meter On/Off, 48v (Phantom), -20db input pad, phase reverse and Mute.
