Hadley, MA- The sound reinforcement system at Ball State University’s Scheumann Stadium was recently upgraded with fourteen JBL Variable Line Array (VLA) speakers. The VLA, in a five-four-five left center right side by side configuration, were mounted on top of the scoreboard at one end of the field. These fourteen speakers provide sound to the whole field.
There was no overhead or side structure to use for mounting on the scoreboard at the stadium, so rigid attachment had to be between the bottom of the speakers and the roof of the scoreboard structure. The designing and installing contractor, IRC Audio of Indianapolis, Indiana, asked Polar Focus to join the team that was devising this unusual configuration.
The mounting system consists of two parts. First there are the interbox brackets which hold the speakers themselves. They are flat sections of steel, precisely sized and with laser cut holes to receive fasteners. They attach to the sides of the arrays and to each other such that the correct angles are achieved and the speakers are securely joined together.
Second is the engineered 18’x10’ interface frame between the clusters and the structural steel of the scoreboard roof. The three bracketed speaker groups are precisely spaced on top of and securely attached to the frame, which is then attached to the roof of the scoreboard structure. This makes the transition complete from the pillars on the roof to the speakers, providing a virtually uninterrupted sequence of rigidly mounted attachment which is wind rated and ready to withstand the elements. The steel used in the bracket and frame system was hot dip galvanized to make it durable in the weather exposed application.
