Reviving Luna Luna Forgotten Fantasy: An Enhanced Audio Experience Powered by Adamson

Luna Luna, Forgotten Fantasy was the brainchild of Viennese artist André Heller, who conceptualized an art amusement park and opened it in Hamburg, Germany in 1987. This unique park featured rides and attractions designed by contemporary artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat and Salvador Dalí. However, the park eventually fell into obscurity and eluded Heller for decades, despite his efforts to rediscover it. That is, until a series of individuals, including hip-hop artist Drake, helped revive the long-lost project.

To power this amusement park’s audio experience, the team behind Luna Luna turned to Adamson to provide a comprehensive and flexible audio solution to meet their needs. The setup consisted of 18x CS10p, 11x CS7p and 7x CS119 intelligent loudspeakers.  An additional 8x IS5c and 5x PC5 passive fills were used for smaller, discreet locations, powered by Lab Gruppen D-Series amplifiers.  Signal distribution was handled by an RME AVB Tool converting MADI to AVB and a Gateway to convert AVB to AES3.  All networking was handled by a single Luminex Gigacore 14R.

Anthony Gonzales, CEO of Luna Luna, and COO of DreamCrew, Drake’s Media Team, adds “The team isknowledgeable, flexible, and understood the nuances of the need for ourexhibition. The number of guests who comment on the audio experience we’vedelivered is tremendous.”

The goal was to create a carnival atmosphere to bring life to these forgotten artworks and carnival rides including restored audio and video. To provide a comprehensive and flexible audio system to cover multiple zones and sources. Head of Audio, Demetrius Moore turned to Adamson once again.

“The benefit was efficient conversations with our audio head Demetrius Moore, who was able to quickly work with Adamson to create an experience that covered 60,000 SQF of space with multiple experiences. The team was quick, efficient and of the highest quality”, says Gonzales.

Moore emphasized, “The versatility, especially with power distribution and the AVB networking in this current system, was crucial. Without those two things, it would’ve been a nightmare to run cable as the layout of the system is so unique, and there are speakers that are so far that being able to daisy chain up to six speakers saved us a lot of time loading in and a lot of cable. Also, with this system being such a unique design, the AVB networking has been an amazing tool as we can send whatever signal we want to each speaker without having to change any hard patch, just jump into the software.”

The CS-Series of loudspeakers have the ability to run daisy-chainable control data and Milan AVB networked audio over a single network cable. This advanced feature made the project possible by minimizing the need for extensive cable home runs, with up to 7 speakers connected in a circuit.

Power could be sourced locally, closer to each speaker box, allowing the power runs to be configured in a separate direction from the control and audio data. This approach eliminated the introduction of power hums.

The ability to link data and audio over IP between cabinets also minimized the switch infrastructure required. A single Luminex Gigacore14R switch was used to cover all the zones, accommodating up to 60 speakers.

Audio matrixing was handled by a DiGiCo SD11 feeding an RME AVB tool (up to 32 channels), which then fed MILAN audio to each zone of speakers. Levels were adjusted using the onboard DSP of each speaker, controlled wirelessly through Adamson’s ArrayIntelligence Software.

For some specific applications, IS-Series speakers were used (IS5c in the Dali dome, Ferris wheel, and Entrance), with MILAN audio sent through an Adamson Gateway for level control and output as AES3 to the Lab Gruppen D-Series amplifiers.

The ability to group zones of speakers together or adjust them granularly from Adamson’s ArrayIntelligence software allowed for precise tuning of the audio levels in each area. The real-time adjustments made possible by walking through the space while the audio was playing was a valuable feature, with no significant complexity in the network topology. The single Luminex switch was using the default profile with AVB enabled, eliminating the need for configuring network IP for control or audio.
