NSCA Expo 2007 will once again provide an expansive offering of NSCA University coursework this March 13-17 in Orlando, Fla. These classes are tailored to fit the needs of all systems professionals, ranging from educational opportunities for administrative support staff all the way to systems operation. For businesses looking to benefit from NSCA’s industry leadership (especially for businesses that don’t have the luxury of an inhouse training department), attending NSCA University can be considered essential to training and educating all levels of staff on multiple aspects of the commercial electronic systems industry. NSCA University curricula can help build upon traditional skills, while helping attendees adapt to the challenges and opportunities created by today’s new technology. The University will also expose individuals to the new products and ideas that can impact a business’ workflow, management, and ability to compete.

NSCA University includes coursework from the NSCA Education department and pre-approved Partner Providers. It is divided into six “colleges,” making it easy to choose the University schedule that best caters to an individual’s expertise. This year, new courses have been added within each college, teaching everything from AV basics (“Listening 101-The Principles of Acoustics [The Room, The Sound, and The Listener]”) to business strategy (“Eight Steps to Increased Profitability”).

Some NSCA University College Highlights

College of Allied Professionals courses are designed for architects, engineers, general contractors, IT department staff, facility managers, consultants, building owners, system operators, and electrical contractors. This year’s Allied Professionals catalog includes two free courses, both taught by instructor Dennis Hall, FAIA, FSCI, SCIP, Hall Architects: “CSI MasterFormat ’04: Organizing Construction Information” and “CSI MasterFormat ’04 for Consultants.” The Organizing Construction Information session will teach how to benefit from updates in CSI MasterFormat ’04’s latest edition, such as expansions to Divisions 25, 27, and 28, which have created new opportunities for anyone working with construction information. “CSI MasterFormat ’04 for Consultants” focuses on new ways to use the program in communication projects when presenting information to clients and contractors. Several Allied Professional courses take different in-depth perspectives on using digital signage to best communicate with customers.

College of Business courses are designed for owners, general managers, support staff, systems sales staff, manufacturers, and independent sales reps. Among the 21 Business courses to choose from, the college includes top returning courses from Expo 2006, including “Construction Accounting Made Simple,” “Strategies for Success: How not to Fail,” “Sharpen Your Management Skills,” and “Architects Will Call You!”

College of Project Management courses are designed for project managers and support staff. If you want to attend Project Management courses, sign up early. Returning courses “BizSkills for Project Managers,” “Project Management of Systems Projects,” and “Managing Multiple Small Projects” sold out at last year’s expo. NSCA’s “#1 Instructor of 2006” Nadim Sawaya of Enterprise Performance Consulting leads “Project Management for Owners,” a workshop teaching you how to maximize your organization’s operational and financial performance, while “You Bid It, You Own It” is a course designed to help you understand how to bid on future projects or control existing ones to your advantage.

College of System Design courses are designed for systems designers, consultants, technicians, systems sales staff, manufacturers, and independent sales reps. One of the NSCA’s Top 10 Returning Courses from Expo 2006 is “Sound Reinforcement Design.” By taking the course, you’ll learn how to optimize coverage and pattern control with techniques taught by David Marsh and Jerrold Stevens, CTS, of Pelton Marsh Kinsella.

College of Systems Sales courses are designed for systems sales staff, manufacturers, independent sales reps, and support staff. “Make More Money! Selling Success” is an NSCA course to keep an eye on. Instructor Gail Kasper guarantees the course will pay for itself by teaching you inside secrets and up-to-date tools (including strategies for better sales calls) to improve sales. The Systems Sales curriculum includes other courses ranging from proposal writing to DSP.

College of Technical Knowledge courses are designed for field technicians, bench technicians, installers, systems sales staff, manufacturers, consultants, independent sales reps, and system operators. “Listening 101-The Principles of Acoustics (The Room, The Sound, and The Listener),” taught by SLS Loudspeakers’ director of technical communications and a “2006 Instructor of the Year,” R. Bob Adams, examines the relationship of the room to noise in the room to the system. Attendees will not only learn how those elements each affect what is heard by the listener, but also how to properly “fix” bad sound when those relationships are unbalanced. And sign up early for these returning Technical Knowledge courses sold out last year: “Sound Reinforcement for Technicians,” “Cable Termination Workshop,” “Smaart Fundamentals,” and “Audio Systems: Concepts, Tips, Techniques, and Troubleshooting.”

All participants in NSCA University programs can work toward a Certificate of Completion. After attaining 24 Learning Units (LUs) over three years, participants are eligible to apply for the award. Learn more at www.nsca.org/ccp.
