AMX has introduced a new Smart Wi-Fi system that the company says delivers improvements in Wi-Fi range and reliability. The Smart Wi-Fi system includes the AMX Smart WAP (NXA-WAP1000) and AMX ZoneDirector Smart WLAN Controller (NXA-WAPZD1000). Both use patented technology from Ruckus Wireless for better Wi-Fi performance in residential and commercial settings, according to AMX.

The AMX Smart WAP is a dual-band 802.11a/b/g/n smart Wi-Fi access point that can be deployed as a standalone access point or combined with the AMX ZoneDirector Smart WLAN Controller as part of a centrally-controlled smart WLAN system. Designed for multimedia applications, the smart Wi-Fi system includes Ruckus’ BeamFlex technology and adaptive signal steering to provide up to a four-fold improvement in signal range. BeamFlex was designed to support the transmission of delay-sensitive applications such as streaming IP-based video or voice. A smart antenna array in each WAP automatically focuses Wi-Fi transmissions toward the receiver, steering signals over the best-performing paths while avoiding interference.

AMX ZoneDirector is a centrally managed WLAN controller for homes and business that enables simplified management of the wireless environment and supports advanced wireless services, such as smart wireless meshing, hotspot authentication, guest networking, and dynamic Wi-Fi security.

“Our new Smart WAP and ZoneDirector represent a significant advance in Wi-Fi performance with smart, adaptive capabilities that clearly outperform other Wi-Fi solutions in the marketplace and offer installers the industry’s simplest configuration out of the box through a Web-based wizard and automated deployment capabilities,” said AMX chief technology officer Robert Noble, in a statement.

The AMX ZoneDirector integrates with network, security, and authentication infrastructures already in place and is configured through a Web-based wizard, according to AMX. Available AMX Smart WAP access points are automatically discovered and are configured by the AMX ZoneDirector.

The smart antenna array of the AMX Smart WAP delivers up to 6dBi of signal gain and delivers 10dB of interference rejection to improve signal range extension, increase reliability, and reduce packet loss. With a small form factor and Power over Ethernet (PoE), the Smart WAP can be mounted on the ceiling to maximize performance without disturbing aesthetics or requiring a local power supply.
