According to MultiDyne, it has introduced the industry’s first solution designed for the transmission of digital video component signals over fiber using standard optical transceivers. Compatible with any optical transport system—WDM platforms, digital cross-connects, etc.—the patent-pending technology of the unidirectional Digital Video (DV) SFPs opens up a new world of cost-effective digital video deployment options:

  • Link extension over new or existing fiber plant
  • Wave Division Multicasting (CWDM and DWDM)
  • Link redundancy for mission-critical applications
  • Video distribution/multicasting.

With coaxial cable as the main transport media, the distance between the signal source and the signal destination is limited to a maximum of 1,000ft. (less than 500ft. for high definition). This is generally adequate for intra-building or small campus networks.

However, with the advent of geographically dispersed studio campuses, more and more digital video data must travel across the sophisticated optical infrastructure of the metro and inter-metro network, where links of 60 miles or more—and the use of WDM technology—is increasingly common.

MultiDyne’s Digital Video SFPs address issues raised by the data-scrambling algorithms used in DV, enabling digital video to be transported over optical networks using standard transceivers.
