Having the right tech furniture item not only makes the job easier, but it also works to limit operator fatigue and impresses clients. Today’s selection makes it easy to fit any space and accommodate any combination of AV technical gear with cable management, easy power availability, and maintenance access. Advances in construction, modularity, and ergonomic design have left the old blocks and boards way behind.
The award-winning GV20 workstation workstation from Argosy Console is based on modular configuration and designed to make the most of both rackmount and desktop hardware components. The console width, depth, and the slope of the rack openings are selectable with the various component options made from 19mm and 32mm MDF. The modules include steel leg supports and padded arm rests with internal steel support bars. The well-ventilated sections allow a versatile range of customized assembly styles for many applications.
Avteq designed the RPS1000L/LE videoconferencing cart to offer a choice of two rack depths. The RPS1000L is 12in. deep and the RPS 1000LE is 15.5in. deep. Both support dual displays up to 65in. and offer an 8RU 19in. rackmount bracket, six-port APC surge protector, M-Audio PSM-200 speaker module, and an integrated adjustable camera shelf. The platform is equipped with 5in. dual wheel casters, two of which have brakes. On the front is a tinted locking glass door, and the unit offers ample ventilation and includes cable management features.
The TC15SAFF welded cabinet presentation cart from Bretford Manufacturing provides a lower cabinet with 19in. rackmount rails, two pull-out shelves for more frequently accessed equipment and a top shelf. The two side pull-out shelves nearly double the work surface, and the TC15SAFF includes a surge-protected 12-outlet electrical assembly with power switch and a 20ft. three-conductor power cable. The 4in. diameter casters are mar-resistant hard black rubber, and each caster has ball-bearing swivel capability. Two have locking brakes. The 16RU bottom section locks, and the unit features all steel construction.
ClearOne offers the Titan Articulating Arm Dual Plasma Cart with monitor folding capability for easy transportation, including the ability to fit through doors and into standard elevators. The unit’s universal mounting system can hold two 42in to 50in. plasma or LCD displays, and the mounting arms can support up to 200lbs. The all-steel construction provides the ability to support up to 800lbs. in equipment. The assembly includes a 9RU equipment rack that is 22in. deep with back panel access. The equipment section has a removable vented front panel, and the unit’s casters are rated for 220lbs. each.
The RA-200 rolling rack from Exact Furniture is the 20RU bigger brother of the 16RU RA-160 with the same furniture-grade laminate, edge-banding construction, and impact-resistant T-molding on the top and bottom. The cabinet has 4in. casters and a locking, removable rear panel for equipment and cabling access. The front side features a locking, tinted Plexiglas door, and the optional internal rack rails can be replaced with shelves. Other options include a wooden front door, ventilation panels, an internal fan, 3in. or 5in. casters, and custom speaker or control panel cutouts.
The Extron Retractor from Extron Electronics is a unique, patent-pending cable retraction and management system designed to work with new or previously installed Cable Cubby enclosures. The Retractor provides discreet, convenient access to AV cables, improving the management of cables within the Cable Cubby. The Retractor is available in versions to support most signal types including VGA, network, PC audio, USB, DVI, or HDMI. It is engineered with a robust, dual-pulley mechanism controlled by a constant-tension spring that can withstand frequent use. Each Retractor module includes a preloaded, continuous 10ft. cable and a 5ft. pigtail for ease of installation.
With a mahogany wood veneer finish and solid wood molding, the 8447-X57 multimedia lectern from Forbes-AV includes a dual-intensity work light that illuminates a slanted work surface with a monitor well for easy visibility and efficient use. Also featured are customizable equipment cut outs on the surface for drop-ins and sliding keyboard and document camera drawers on the user’s side. Locking pocket doors open to ample storage space and one bay with a rack system. Two concealed access doors on the front of the unit allow for easy access to wiring of inner components. Included are furniture levelers and two cutouts in the bottom for cable management.
For nonlinear editing and graphics, the Soho Signature Series Premier from Forecast Consoles offers a 72in. wide work area with a 24.25in. depth and a rear extrusion for option mounting. The unit is available in a range of finishes including a laminate or linoleum counter and black or vinyl wood edges. The keyboard support is slung under the front edge, and a computer fits on the side—out of the way of operator legs and feet. Multiple monitor mounting arms extend upward from the rear section, and each side is topped with a small speaker platform. The unit is designed with Forecast Consoles MASTERail technology for easy assembly and modular flexibility.
The infinitely customizable 95-TECHB-000 Technical Workbench from Hergo Ergonomic Support Systems stands 84in. high and 72in. wide with three 11GA metal base frames, a high-pressure laminated desktop, two telescopic support uprights, three vertical cable-management raceways, and six gliders. Options include a light assembly; tool trolley; peg, cork, and whiteboards; book and mounting shelves; storage bin rail mount; power and cable management; articulating keyboard tray; and flatpanel monitor arm solutions. HSA designed the HRSTD-II to allow eye-level access for equipment normally known to have a good many front-panel controls such as media players, processors, and controllers. The enclosure features a 10RU undermounted 19in. rack space with mounting rails; a sliding, lockable cover; two side-by-side 3RU rack bays on a GlideOut enclosure; and three cable ports in the rear of the desk surface for wiring. The desk surface and overhead rack bays are completely protected by a lockable roll-down cover equipped with twin handles.
The IVC-CLC credenza from In View Furniture combines aesthetics with solid durability using metal frame construction beneath an elegant laminate finish exterior. The 36in. high rolling unit’s height can be adjusted with motorized activation and includes rotary keyboard tray, cam locks, two adjustable shelves, rack rails, umbilical cable support, levelers, and two 3in. floor grommets. The cabinet features two overlay doors, two service access doors, and a cutout for a connection box. For instant customization to suit the user, the display tilt also has a motorized adjustment.
Martin & Ziegler equipped the MaxRack 91-14 editing desk to accommodate large video monitors and leave a 91in. width for plenty of work room. The bottom section has a built-in 13RU equipment rack, and the raised monitor platforms include 3RU rack rails for mounting standard 19in. rack gear directly beneath the monitors. The extremely wide work area permits two operators to comfortably sit side-by-side. The construction is 1in. plywood with the top and bottom laminated for extra strength to avoid sagging over time. The finish is available in a wide range of colors.
The SchoolMate MT-400 lectern from Mediatech has a black sparkle laminate top featuring a flip-and-store monitor mount that can accommodate a flatscreen display device up to 19in. diagonal. The monitor cabling extends through a rectangular access grommet on the presenter’s right, and the unit has a flip-up side shelf with 35lb. capacity on the left side. The front side has a lockable and removable panel for direct access to the rear of installed equipment while the rear side includes locking drawer and locking double door access to the bottom compartment.
Designed for the end user, engineered for the installer, the ViewPoint console furniture system from Middle Atlantic Products has modular construction for maximum versatility in custom configuration. The variety of layouts is most evident in the monitor mounting variations using the optional monitor mounting arms. The company also provides its Designer 3D layout software for customized design. The units are comprised of fully welded Uni-Frame workstation bays that simplify installation with options including wedges, turrets, bay extenders, and side panels. The assembly is available with an 18in. deep work surface or a 34in. desktop.
The Nova Solutions 45 Series computer training desks feature three designs for monitor configuration including the Downview visual display option that holds and protects the display inside the desk. The ADA-compliant desks feature Thermofused laminate tops and bases with PVC-edge banding, wire management, and power strip along with Total Access removable modesty panels for easy cable access. The units are ideal for testing centers, classrooms, libraries, corporate training centers, and computer labs. An internal shelf holds a computer and the keyboard support extends without blocking view of the display.
Among the Sanus Systems Foundations Component 100 Series AV rack solutions, the CFR127 is a rolling 55in. tall rack unit using swivel casters and adjustable feet. Convection cooling allows hot air to escape through the top vents while a lockable tempered glass door with quarter turn handle encloses the components and maintaining visibility. The side and back panels are removable to provide complete access for wiring and connections. The unit features welded construction and provides up to 27RU in equipment space.
For AV equipment storage and operation in areas where strong security is needed, the Steel Rolltop from Secure Equipment Company can house a variety of gear in various combinations. The flat work surface can accommodate many makes and models of mixers and adds three upper slots with the capability to provide 3RU of standard 19in. rack space. The upper slot compartment slides forward and has open rear access for wiring. Available in 3ft., 4ft., 5ft., and 6ft. widths, the cabinet’s standard depth is 45in. The Rolltop is spring-loaded for easy sliding, and the unit can be purchased in 23in. or 30in. desk height.
Among its variety of multimedia lecterns, Sound-Craft Systems offers the Presenter Series constructed of medium density fiberboard and plywood. All joints are glued and secured with wood screws while the work surface and shelves are covered with Nevamar laminate and ARP coating. The unit includes a front access panel and on the presenter side, two lockable doors allow access to equipment in the lower section. A side drawer slides out to accommodate a document camera and on top, a keyboard drawer slides into the structure to be completely hidden. The lecterns are available in 36in., 46in., and 60in. widths with a standard 31in. depth.

The Media Manager Lectern V2 from Spectrum Industries is equipped with removable front and rear access panels for which customized logos are available, and there is a pullout locking keyboard drawer with a flip-down wrist pad. The locking document camera drawer includes a nonskid pad inside and can be ordered for the right or left side. A clear acrylic panel on the front door allows monitoring of interior equipment and quick release door hinges provide easier access for installation and maintenance.
