Researchers at The University of Osaka have been working on a solution for one of projection mapping’s main pitfalls.
Projection mapping applications typically take place either outdoors at night, or in very dim environments. This is because any ambient light washes out the projection, an issue that researchers have tackled with the addition of an illumination device that combines an LED panel with a lens array.
“Projection mapping has traditionally been difficult to use in bright environments,” says the study’s lead researcher Kotaro Fujimura. “We wanted to overcome that limitation by exploring the idea of illumination that deliberately avoids shining light on the target surface.”
This technique utilizes an LED display as a separate light source, which is filtered through a specialized lens array that directs light to specific parts of the room, allowing the projection mapping to remain vivid.
