LG Display today announced the world’s first high resolution (100ppi) stretchable display. Flexible displays have become en vogue with applications such as smartphones and monitors, but this new technology takes things to a new level. Made of the special silicon used in contact lenses, LG Display says their new technology is the industry’s first to achieve 20% stretchability.
Utilizing a spring-shaped wiring system, the display is highly resilient, allowing stretching, folding, and twisting to take place while still reverting back to its original form like rubber band. A micro-LED light source provides full-color RGB and allows resilience against external impacts. LG Display says that the new technology’s versatility is key in positioning it for commercial uses, noting, “Alongside its thin, lightweight design, the Stretchable display’s revolutionary technology offers next-level versatility for various daily scenarios. Easily attachable to curved surfaces such as skin, clothing, furniture, automobiles and aircraft, this unique innovation expands the potential of the display in various industries including fashion, wearables, mobility and gaming.”
