Founded 38 years ago with 24 people, Central Christian Church inHenderson, Nevada, has grown to a congregation of 5000. This growingchurch recently opened a new building in the Las Vegas suburb.Technical director for the church Barton Rendel explains how the plansfor the new building unfolded: “Internally, we began work on a newfacility nearly five years ago. We went to sound reinforcement designconsultant Acoustic Dimensions of Dallas about three years ago, and thepeople there had a major influence on the design of our main room.”
Acoutic Dimensions had three challenges in designing the project.(1) The Las Vegas audience was used to a high level of audioperformance; (2) They had to work on a very tight budget; and (3) Theywere faced with an aggressive construction schedule. Central ChristianChurch wanted a concert-level sound system for the 186,000-square-footmain room that seats 3200. To meet the challenge, the team at AcousticDimensions worked with David Miller, architect; Marty O’Connor of TeamDevelopment Inc., technology and production consultant; and Chris Contiof Signal Perfection Ltd., sound reinforcement contractor.
The team chose Peavey Media Matrix for processing of the wide rangeof programming, from spoken word to full-range music. Bag Endsubwoofers were chosen to round out the audio reproduction. And threespeaker clusters were flown above the main platform to provide the mainleft-center-right sound source, along with a delay speaker system.Eight double-18 Bag End D18E-I subwoofer speaker systems provide thebass.
On the video side, the church chose a comprehensive video system forthe auditorium, chapel and multipurpose room. Video and audio weredesigned to work together, controlled from a central location withlocal controls in each room. Betacam SP is the building’s primaryproduction format. The production switcher is from Play. And a2-channel MATV system runs throughout the facility.
As Central Christian Church continues to expand, they plan to buildadditional educational and multipurpose facilities and a 10,000-seatauditorium.
