Optoma Unveils Its First Short-Throw Projector

Optoma Technology, which makes digital projection and display devices, introduced the Optoma EX252ST, the company’s first short-throw projector. Targeting the education, government, and business markets, the EX525ST can project a high-resolution image as large as 100 inches diagonally from 4 feet away, making it suitable for situations where a traditional projector cannot be used or space is limited.
Officials said the projector would be available this month. Pricing was not yet available.
“The EX525ST creates many new opportunities for projector deployment,” said Jon Grodem, director of product and marketing for Optoma. “The short-throw not only produces large images within close distances to the screen, but also allows users to stand closer to the screen without affecting the image. This is important when interactive whiteboard technology is used and when giving presentations in smaller conference rooms.”
In order to shorten the EX525ST’s projection distance, Optoma developed a new optical projection system that incorporates a new short-throw lens with aspherical lens elements that provide a throw ratio of 0.6:1. This allows the projector to produce large images when positioned very close to a wall or screen. Shortening the necessary projection distance greatly increases the number of options available for installation to include tabletops, ceilings, walls, or even the floor. Additionally, its high-definition input capability increases the EX525ST’s application possibilities.
The EX525ST features the latest Texas Instruments’ DLP chipset and incorporates Optoma’s BrilliantColor technology, which the company says ensures that images have vivid, accurate color. The projector uses a 200-watt lamp, with 2,500 lumens and a contrast ratio of 2,500:1. Connectivity options, such as DVI, VGA, S-Video, Composite, RS-232, USB, and RJ45 provide connectivity to a variety of data and video sources.
