Disney Movie Club shuts down, Sony now handling Disney’s physical media

Some physical releases are about to become much harder to find

After over 20 years, Disney Movie Club is shuttering its doors. The program has been consumers’ best resource for acquiring physical copies of Disney films new and old, including DVD and Blu-Ray, and its shut down is another nail in the coffin for physical media’s demise.

“After 23 magical years, it’s time to say goodbye,” reads Disney Movie Club’s announcement. “After serving over 10 million valued Club Members, we have made the difficult decision to close the Disney Movie Club. We will miss the opportunity to be part of the lives of so many Disney fans, including yours.”

Disney commits $1.9 billion to park expansion

As a result of the program’s shutdown, Disney is shifting its physical media operations over to Sony, who will be responsible for the handling of “new releases and catalog titles on physical media to consumers through retailers and distributors in the U.S. and Canada,” including manufacturing, sales, and distribution, according to Variety.

Disney Movie Club was famously the best resource for finding Disney’s back catalog, as not all of its many films and shows are available on its streaming service, Disney+. Disney’s decision closely echoes that of Netflix, who ceased its DVD operations late last year. The last day for current Disney Movie Club members to submit orders is May 20, 2024.
