OpenAI begins C2PA compliance by adding watermarks to AI-generated images

Watermarks an effort to comply with the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity amid AI deception

As part of an attempt to fight back against the growing use of AI for deceptive purposes, OpenAI has announced that still images created with their DALL-E 3 program will carry a watermark in their metadata, verifying that the image was created with AI.

The new watermarks are one component of OpenAI’s compliance with standards laid out by the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA). The C2PA is an entity founded by Adobe, arm, BBC, Intel, Microsoft, and Truepic, designed to combat digital media deception birthed by the AI boom.

“C2PA unifies the efforts of the Adobe-led Content Authenticity Initiative (CAI) which focuses on systems to provide context and history for digital media, and Project Origin, a Microsoft- and BBC-led initiative that tackles disinformation in the digital news ecosystem,” reads C2PA’s website.

According to OpenAI’s announcement, watermarks will appear on any images generated either with ChatGPT, or via the company’s API that feeds into DALL-E 3. The company states that the watermark feature will roll out to mobile users on February 12. Speaking on the new feature’s impact on image generation, OpenAI says it will have a “negligible effect on latency and will not affect the quality of the image generation.”
